Accountability

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) recognizes that providing information to the public is fundamental to the operation of good government.

Timely, accurate information provided in a consistent manner helps ensure that the public is informed about government policies, activities, initiatives and programs and services.

It allows the government to take into account the concerns and views of the public in establishing priorities, developing policies and implementing programs.

It also ensures that the GNWT is visible, accessible and answerable to the people it serves.

With the establishment of the Open Government Policy in January 2018, the GNWT has committed to transparency and accountability through public access to government data (Open Data) and information (Open Information), and public engagement on government decision-making (Open Dialogue) in a way that is responsive to the needs and expectations of the residents of the Northwest Territories. All Ministers are accountable for the implementation of the Open Government Policy.

As part of its commitment to Open Government, this website reports on Ministerial travel expenses and meetings with outside parties. It includes information about the current Legislative Assembly, as well as historical information about travel and meetings from past Assemblies.

This website is currently being updated to reflect the election of the 19th Legislative Assembly. Regular posting of expense and meeting information will resume in January 2020.
